HÄUSER-AWARD 2022

Make more of it is the motto for the HÄUSER-AWARD 2022. That’s because we’ve decided to address a theme that’s more topical than ever before: preserving and refurbishing existing buildings and adapting them to changed requirements in terms of comfort, layout or energy efficiency doesn’t just make economic and ecological sense, it conserves resources and is more sustainable too. Especially because existing properties are mostly located in evolved settings with intact infrastructure, and the sites are already developed.

And last but not least: houses with a history have charm. Even nondescript buildings or ones that might look unattractive at first glance often turn out to have astonishing potential and qualities that are just waiting to be discovered and enhanced.

There’s no reason why a structure that’s showing its age can’t be transformed into attractive and contemporary architecture again – and that’s precisely what we want to demonstrate with our competition. That’s why we’re looking for the best remodels, extensions, loft conversions, vertical extensions, repurposings and modernisations.

Regardless of whether the project involves gentle renovation or bold intervention – the awards will be presented to outstandingly designed houses that exemplify how intelligent planning and a high degree of creativity can boost the liveability of existing structures.

We are holding the HÄUSER AWARD 2022 in collaboration with Bund Deutscher Architektinnen und Architekten (BDA), Verband Privater Bauherren e. V. (VPB), JUNG and Parkett Dietrich. The results of the competition are scheduled for publication in HÄUSER in March 2022. There will also be an award ceremony at which the winners will be officially announced and honoured. In addition, there are plans to present the best projects in a book.

Furthermore, in collaboration with our media partner, television news channel n-tv, we also intend to present each of the winning projects in the form of a short film wherever possible.

Conditions of entry

Architects from all over Europe are eligible to enter the competition. Participation is free of charge.

They must be the originators of the projects submitted. The houses must have been completed after 01 January 2018 and not have been previously published in a general-interest magazine. In addition, the award winners must agree that the winning houses will not be published in any other general-interest magazine prior to the announcement and publication of the competition results (scheduled to appear in HÄUSER 2/2022).

Each participant may submit a maximum of two projects under the condition that the participants and owners/clients agree to the publication of photos and plans in HÄUSER and on the HÄUSER website, as well as in the intended book.

The prize money

The total prize money of 15,000 euros will be allocated as follows:

1st prize: 7,000 euros
2nd prize: 5,000 euros
3rd prize: 3,000 euros

The jury may choose to allocate the prize money differently.

The VPB will pay the owner/client of each award-winning house an additional bonus of 1,000 euros. This does not apply if the owner is also the architect of the house.

Interior Prize

The Interior Prize, which is held in collaboration with Parkett Dietrich, is presented to an interior design of outstanding quality. The jury of the HÄUSER AWARD 2022 will select one winner from among all the entries submitted. The key selection criteria will include a convincing use of materials, excellent functionality and the integration of furnishings into the design.

The winner of the Interior Prize will receive 2,000 euros and likewise be published.

The jury

The works submitted will be judged by an independent jury made up as follows:

  • Julia Erdmann, Architect, Hamburg
  • Susanne Wartzeck, President of the Association of German Architects (BDA)
  • Thomas Penningh, President of the Verband Privater Bauherren (VPB)
  • Reiner Nagel, Chairman of the Bundesstiftung Baukultur
